We must give careful thought in advance to the question we are going to ask and how to phrase it; it must be the question that is of greatest importance to us at this time.

We must ensure that the environment is calm and undisturbed.

We must be fully conversant with the method that is to be used.

The mind must be calm and focused on the question throughout the consultation.

Carry out the method to obtain each of the six lines in turn, starting with the lowest, and record the results.

Step One: identify the two trigrams, the lower representing the inner world of the mind and the upper representing the outer world, and consider their meanings.

Step Two: identify the nuclear hexagram, which reveals one’s deeper motives and concerns. This is optional.

Step Three: identify the answer hexagram and read the Judgement and associated Commentary, which describe the situation in general terms.

Step Four: consider in turn the moving lines and the specific advice or information the text offers. The position of these lines within the hexagram can also be significant.

Step Five: let the moving lines change in character to produce a result hexagram, which usually describes the likely outcome of following the advice or course of action suggested in the answer.
